In 2016 she made the decision to turn to writing full time\, and since then her work has been published in literary journals worldwide. In 2020 she was shortlisted for the Independent Arts ‘Jot’ Award and in 2018 she won the OWT Short Fiction Prize. The Shadowing of Combfoot Chase is her first novel. \nRooted in concerns about surveillance capitalism and told in polyphonic\, dark and witty episodes\, the novel reveals a society under threat. Thought-provoking\, frightening and funny in equal measure\, The Shadowing of Combfoot Chase asks us to consider the consequences of privacies being eroded through hyper-surveillance\, and challenges us not to take our freedoms for granted. \nFive Things I Can See –  by Fran Heath \nFran Heath is the author of bildungsroman novel\, Pencil Lead. She’s also written and illustrated a rhyming picture book – How We Choose to Play – and a book of dreams – Unconscious Adventures.\n\n\nHer second novel\, Five Things I Can See\, is a snapshot into one woman’s struggles with the anxieties of modern life\, motherhood and personal fulfilment. DESCRIPTION:Johanna was researching Isabella de Fortibus for one of her much enjoyed lectures back in 2015. She could not find a complete work about the life of the Lady of the Wight. We told her ‘You will have to write one yourself’ and so began years of enjoyable research for Johanna. Eventually Johanna was not able to continue. She and I had worked together for many years at Carisbrooke Church Shop in Newport\, and I had read several of the completed chapters. I took it over!\nPenny Keevil.\nBrought up in the Cathedral City of Wells\, I had lived alongside the heart of the mediaeval city and had attended Sunday School at the Cathedral. I accessed many places not open to the general public and developed a love of them all. Johanna has provided me with immense pleasure with her lectures and study days on local buildings over many of my 52 years living on the Island. Such topics\, as Island Houses; her research on Isabella\, the Lady of the Wight; the history of Carisbrooke Castle and her research on the local House of Industry\, which relates to my own family history and research on the Workhouse System. Her study days at the Castle given by the Museum have been a joy filling me with her enthusiasm and ability to bring the past vividly to life for us. I am delighted to be able to be given this brilliant book a chance to be widely read.\nLin Watterson

Since his death in obscurity there has been growing recognition of his genius and a resurgence of interest in his work. His admirers include Jarvis Cocker\, Alex Turner\, Don Black\, Thea Gilmore\, Cerys Matthews\, Benjamin Clementine and Neil Gaiman. \nJohn Watterson is the UK’s leading performer of Jake’s songs. As Fake Thackray he has toured with Fairport Convention and performed at Latitude\, Cropredy and the Edinburgh Fringe Festivals. He has also played for Jake’s family. John has appeared many times on radio\, including Radio 4’s Great Lives\, a Radio 2 documentary on Jake presented by Cerys Matthews and Radio 3’s The Verb hosted by Ian McMillan. DESCRIPTION:An Evening with Mark Rowe\nOn the 10th MAY (re-scheduled from 7th April)\, we’re delighted to welcome professional travel writer Mark Rowe to the bookshop to coincide with the publication of his book Isle of Wight (Slow Travel): Local\, Characterful Guides to Britain’s Special Places. A professional travel writer for over 20 years\, Mark Rowe regularly contributes to the Independent\, Telegraph and Guardian and various magazines and journals\, including Countryfile and Nat Geo Traveller.   \nRowe has previously written guides to both the Outer Hebrides and Orkney\, and he’s become a bit of a specialist on Islands. \nHe first visited the Isle Of Wight as a teenager returning many times over the years as a birdwatcher\, walker and eventually parent. His research for the book required him to visit the Island over thirty times\, always searching for the less obvious\, the more subtle joys and quirky delights that we islanders enjoy here. \nThere can be no more discerning critic than a seasoned travel writer. It’s reassuring that Mark’s love and appreciation of the Island are present throughout the book. He shines a flattering light on many diverse aspects\, from food to trees\, artists\, churches. Even cemeteries get a mention. His depth of understanding of the Island’s culture and history is second to none. \nA ‘slow guide’ encourages visitors and residents alike to walk\, cycle or use public transport\, to slow down and savour the pleasures that might otherwise be just a blur through the car window. \nOur bookseller\, Paul\, praises the guide:\n“At last\, a guide book that does the Island justice\, at 312 pages there is so much great content that even the most clued-up resident will find something new to explore\, and the illustrations and maps are a delight.
